Right now, everyone is talking about Metaverse. And Facebook is so serious about this Metaverse that Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg changed his company name to Meta Platforms Incorporated or Meta, in short. That’s why now, in all Facebook apps like Messenger, Whatsapp, Instagram, instead of “from Facebook” message now we see “from Meta” message. So what is Metaverse? and is it a blessing or a curse for our future?

    What Is Metaverse?

According to Facebook, It is the next evolution of social connection, and our mark bro is going to help in bringing the Metaverse to life, and that’s why Mark Zuckerberg changed his company name to Meta to reflect his commitment to the future of the Metaverse.

In simple words, Metaverse is a shared 3d virtual world or worlds in which anything will be possible where people can study, work, interact, earn money, and play games with the help of VR ( Virtual Reality) headsets or AR (Augmented Reality) glasses.

You can do things like going to a virtual concert, taking a trip online, trying on, or buying digital outfits for your avatars as we do in games like PUBG and Fortnite. Metaverse can be a game-changer for work from home or study from home ideas. Instead of seeing co-workers or classmates on a video call grid, students or co-workers can join a 3d virtual space where they can work or study together.

Other Companies that are building Metaverse

Besides Facebook, other companies like Microsoft and Nvidia are also planning to work on Metaverse. Richard Kerris, vice president of Nvidia’s Omniverse platform, said that“We think there’s going to be a lot of companies building virtual worlds and endowments in the metaverse, in the same way, there’s been a lot of companies doing things on the World Wide Web” and he added that “It’s important to be an open and extensible, so you can teleport to different worlds whether it’s by one company or another company, the same way I go from one web page to another web page.”

So no company will build Metaverse by itself. Video game companies like Epic Games are also taking a leading role in it. Epic Games the company behind Fortnite raised 1 Billion dollars from investors to help with its long-term plans for building the Metaverse.

Consumer brands are also jumping in this trend. Italian fashion house Gucci collaborated with Roblox to sell a collection of digital-only accessories. Companies like Coca-Cola and Clinique have sold digital tokens pitched as a stepping stone to the Metaverse.

    What about our data?

It’s evident that in Metaverse, big tech companies will collect more personal data to improve the overall experience, but can we trust a company like Facebook with our data that puts astronomical profits before people? and also, Mark Zuckerberg said that “Ads are going to continue being an important part of the strategy across the social media parts of what we do, and it will probably be a meaningful part of the metaverse, too.”

In my opinion, Metaverse should be open source to know what type of data is being collected or what is being done with the collected data. What are your thoughts about the collection of data? Let me know in the comments?

Metaverse – A Curse Or Blessing

Metaverse has many pros like we can create our worlds and outfits and then charge other people to use them. Gaming in it is more real, we can study or work with our friends or co-workers in 3d virtual spaces, but there are some cons of Metaverse too.

Right now, social media apps are becoming so addictive, and the goal of every social media app is that they want you to keep using it as much as you can, and the same goes for the Metaverse. User addiction and problematic social media use are considerable concerns. We see now how much people are already addicted to screens; imagine how much Metaverse will be addictive.

Experts are also concerned that people can use it to escape from reality. Imagine someone’s avatar being so fit and good-looking in Metaverse, but in real life, that person is not as fit and gorgeous compared to the avatar that he’s been using in the Metaverse. so automatically, he’ll want to spend more time in Metaverse than in the real-life.

Some people like this idea of the Metaverse, and some are discouraging. Still, in upcoming years, Metaverse will happen because already all big tech companies have invested millions of dollars in this project.
